On September 29th and 30th, Jam Link Intl. will host the 3rd annual Aarhus Reggae Festival at Voxhall (Vester Allé 15, 8000) in Aarhus, Denmark. As they’ve done previously, day one, the 29th, will be dedicated to the dancehall culture, while day two, the 30th, will focus more on the ever growing reggae scene.
This year’s theme will be on “the foundation of Jamaican music.” That being said, unlike other festivals, the 2017 Aarhus Reggae Fest will be centered on the sound system tradition. What this means is that, as was customary in the early days at Jamaican parties and stage shows, all artists will be supported by a selector behind a turntable spinning the rhythm on vinyls.
So far the organizers have confirmed long time reggae sensation Norris Man and Jamaican born, Germany based, reggae star, Teacha Dee. Additionally, they have added Donna Marie, Omar Perry and several others. The full line up will be announced shortly. The popular brand Reggae Grill, which is known for their amazing Jamaican cuisine, will be on hand cooking up their famous reggae burgers. There will also be reggae inspired art on display by Vogel Arts.
At approximately 9:00 Pm or 21:00 hours German time, Teacha Dee entered the special stage at Reggae Jam backed by Next Generation Family Band based in Munich. Wearing a pair of fire red shoes and a matching long sleeve button up shirt covered with black suspenders that coordinated with his Black Turban and Jeans pants, he ran out kicking up a storm of cheers from anywhere between 15,000 to 20,000 patrons.
From the very moment his name was announced, the anticipation of the audience could be clearly heard and his appearance did not disappoint. Teacha Dee’s set began with a loud roar which was paid to his presence alone which lasted for couple seconds while he danced and waved hello to the audience from left to right of the stage before he began singing.
Teacha Dee is no stranger to the Reggae Jam massive as it was there about 6 years ago his career took off in Deutschland and the rest of Europe. His appearance now was greeted with the rewards of years of ground work going from clubs to clubs pushing his brand of roots music.
Song after song the audience sang along with him. There were short bouts of extreme clarity as the band played a bit lower than his vocals as he drove the point home on ever song especially the new ones of his album “Rastafari Way“.
At the end of his set, he called upon stage “Don Tippa” who have been on the journey with him musically for as long as his name has been known to patrons worldwide. He left the stage with people begging for more but time did not permit it.
Here is a video provided by “Reggae Story” which highlighted “Smoke and Fly”, “Jah Jah is calling” and “Emperor Selassie”.
Teacha Dee has teamed up with House Of Riddim out of Austria, Giddimani Records based in the United States, Greezzly Productions from Italy, Boomrush Productions from Germany and Evidence Music out of Switzerland to drop what is dubbed his “debut” album today.
This 13 track album titled “Rastafari Way”, has edged away the “Debut Album” title away from ” Reggae Souljahs: Beating Babylon with Music”. This was mainly because “Reggae Souljahs” was more a compilation of released singles than a complete album when it was released in 2011.
Rastafari Way opened todays sales by holding the number 4 spot on Hungary’s Itunes Charts for several hours as digital shops open. The album has been available for pre-order since February 28th and may have racked up some serious numbers for the 16 days before official release.
Beatport.com has reported that Teacha Dee’s single “Rastafari Way” on the Horn Of Africa riddim compilation, has made it’s debut in 48th place on it’s Reggae/Dub top 100 charts yesterday.
Beatport is a digital music platform which provides music in Mp3, Wav format and ad-free streaming to it’s users. This store, started in 2004 was geared towards providing top quality music to deejays and club owners. It has become popular for providing original sound based content too such as sample packs for producers. Beatport has recently changed hands after a wapping sale to SFX Entertainment. In recent times this music provider has been experiencing some troubles but it has remained a top hub for EDM, Dub and many other forms of music.
Implications of this chart placement
This is a strong indication that the single has been gaining some traction with Deejays across the globe. The exact number of users on Beatport is not exactly known, however it has been rumoured to be in the millions all customers included. The integrity of this chart is also very high as Beatport has made serious efforts to rid its services of chart fixing users and labels.
It also means that the main audience of Beatport (EDM fans) maybe tuning in to the roots reggae vibe of “Rastafari Way” in a strong way as it went in at number 48 out of a 100.
Do Radio Deejays buy music?
Yes, Deejays worldwide have been coming under pressure by major labels for not having legal copies of tracks since of recent times. This has caused some strange situations where promotional tracks without proper labelling indicating that they were given for promotional purposes are refused by top deejays. The High quality offered by these site (for example Beatport) is ideal and safer as many producers provide sample rates way below standard.
“Born Free” a nineteen years veteran and C.E.O. of Born Free Records stated that,
“In today’s world, it is not the norm to buy music people just stream it.
A lot of deejays stream (music) from online.“
In regards to the Deejays who still purchase music he explains,
“A good deejay will want the best copy also if they play on radio.
It would sound like rubbish if it is an illegal download.“
Born Free also warned that Deejays who steal songs from videos and slideshows on youtube are not getting the best sound of the music. He explains that,
“Youtube downloads go thought filters during the upload and also during the download which changes the sound quality.“
Perfect Giddimani stated that a lot of deejays have been linking up directly and though the Giddimani Record’s email address for official promotional copies of the Horn Of Africa project”. This means many of the people supporting the project have high quality masters playing on air.
Greg “Giddimani” Rose c.e.o. of Giddimani Records has expressed delight and gratitude for the performance of the overall project and congratulated Teacha Dee via a public post on facebook in regards to the chart placement and promotional work done. Other users called this latest feat an “up move” for Teach and his music career.
More positive reactions came from deejays and sound system operators within the European scene. The majority of shares and likes however came from Costa Rica, Argentina and Uruguay where the project has been playing non-stop between the radio stations respectively.
The megamix which was present by Dj Become for Rising Sound based in Costa Rica has been racking up near to 20,000 clicks on soundcloud while the official video on youtube has racked up just under 34,000 views in 3 weeks.
